- Internet is made available to commercial users, do you remember dial up modems??
- Airbag is invented, and has been saving lives and hitting people in the face ever since.
- Release of Nirvana’s Nevermind signifies the start of the grunge era.
- The films Beethoven, Beauty and the Beast and Father of the Bride are movie gold. Now they are classics!
- Average price of rent hits an all time high at $495- you can’t even buy a TV for that price now!
We hope this brings back fond memories of the early 90s! Enjoy your yearbook! 1991_THE_TORCH_CAMP_CHAMPIONS_25_YEARS.pdf by lmesches for Alumni, General, Yearbooks Tuesday, May 4, 2010 @ 3:04 pm | (0) CommentsFor all you children of the eighties, not to worry, we did not forget about you! Hot off the retro-press, back to a time when: - DOS is released by Microsoft. This is an odd thought – at this time, no one had heard of Bill Gates, no one had home computers and no one had created any Microsoft jokes.
- You spent hours at a time completely captivated by playing Frogger, Asteroids, Oregon Trail and Pac-Man.
- Lady Diana Spencer and Charles, the Prince of Wales are married. Fathers worldwide worry that daughters wedding expectations are now ridiculously high.
- Ronald Reagan is elected president at the age of 69 (this is the oldest president we have elected to date!) and boy was he cool! During this same year, President Reagan was shot, but this attempted assassination failed.
- The wreckage from the Titanic is found in the North Atlantic. People obsess on how to release the riches of this find – few guess that it will eventually be film director James Cameron (who in 1981 worked on “Escape From New York”.
- Muhammad Ali retires. Boxing loses most of its cool factor.
- 3M launches Post-It Notes, creating the most effective way ever to leave notes for children on mirrors.
- MTV, the channel that now brings you tons of reality shows and a variety of pop culture programs, launched on August 1. “Video Killed the Radio Star” by the Buggles is the first music video EVER played on MTV! This channel introduced all music, all the time. MTV and it’s VJ’s changed pop culture dramatically.

We take care of our adopted 2 mile section of Highway 1431 by maintaining it throughout the year. We clean this portion of the road a total of 6 times a year. During each of the 3 terms throughout the summer, our Senior Campers go out and pick up trash and make the road a prettier site to see. Our counselors also do a cleanup during orientation. In addition to this, our Outdoor School Staff go out to beautify the road twice a year. In addition to cleaning the road, our counselors have volunteered at the Boys and Girls Club of Marble Falls, at animal shelters and by cleaning the local theater. They have also painted the little league baseball stadium in local Marble Falls and built a sandbox for a local child care center. Our Senior campers give back to our camp community all summer long by serving food, washing dishes and interacting with our youngest campers on a daily basis. They spend time bringing our campers to their activities, and they also assist in teaching at various activity sites. On April 24, 2010 our year-round camp Directors and 2 of our girl’s Division Leaders volunteered at the Hill Country Ride in Austin and cheered as over 500 riders finished biking 10, 65 and 100 miles! Among the riders was our very own Boy’s Camp Director, Jonathan Shirley (not pictured below).

There are places you can shop, wander and eat. There is also a wonderful art gallery called the Riverbend Art Gallery. The Gallery Director, Marta Stafford, has agreed to donate 10% of any purchases our camp families make to our Camp Scholarship Fund! This is a wonderful gesture, and we would love it if our camp families would support the local area by stopping in at the Gallery and checking it out! We are excited to increase the available funding for our scholarship program!
by lmesches for Alumni, Parents, Scholarship Fund Friday, January 29, 2010 @ 5:45 pm | (0) CommentsJoin us at Camp Champions from March 12-15 for a long weekend with all the excitement of camp! Why should kids have all the fun? Bring the whole family and experience camp like you wish you could have when you were a kid. The days are filled with activities including waterskiing/wakeboarding, ropes course, climbing wall, kayaking, tennis, archery, pickleball, group gaga games, pool play (with our 2 fantastic Schlitterbahn waterslides at 150 ft each!) and other lake activities. If any of this sounds too strenuous, you can choose to sit on the over-the-water gazebos, gaze at the view and watch your children kayak or water ski. Evenings will be celebrated with fun activities, live music and camp food like you’ve never had anywhere else! For more information, please visit http://championsretreat.com/default.aspx/MenuItemID/271/MenuGroup/_Home.htm. We hope to see you at Family Camp!
