1980 Yearbook!

Alumni, we know it’s been a while since we last posted a yearbook and we don’t want to make you wait any longer! And now we turn back to the beginning of the 80′s…

  • Moak Sir graduates High School! It would be 17 years before he would join the Camp Champions team.
  • Pac Man is released, and later becomes one of the most famous video games of all time! Ms. Pac Man is not far behind, and everyone loves this female character! You could play this game endlessly, really.
  • CNN becomes the first 24 hour cable news station
  • US boycotts the Moscow Olympics. A boycott is led in retaliation by the Soviet Union 3 years later.
  • Fax machines become a domestic item. Remember those?
  • John Lennon is shot.
  • Queen releases “Another One Bites the Dust”
  • The U.S. population was 227,224,681 now it is 310,916,437. My, how we’ve grown!
  • Postage costs 15 cents. Now, in 2010,  it’s 44 cents and most children don’t even know how to address or stamp an envelope.
  • Mexico is home to the first ever panda born in captivity
  • Miracle On Ice.. Enough said.

It was an eventful year, and we hope that this yearbook brings back fond memories of the summer at CC on Lake LBJ! 1980_THE_TORCH_CAMP_CHAMPIONS.pdf

Tailgate @ UT!

Calling all Camp Champions Longhorn fans, or Champions who are not Longhorn fans but will be in Austin this Saturday,

Camp Champions will be tailgating this Saturday for the Texas-Iowa State football game.  We will be sharing tailgate space with the wonderful Denbow family whose son Ryan attended camp, and daughters Ashley and Kelsey have worked as Champions’ counselors.  The tailgate spot is on the southeast corner of Red River and MLK, behind the alumni building (John W. Hargis Hall).  Look for the bevo statue!

Since the game starts at 11am we will be at the tailgate area around 10:15am so please stop by on your way to the game.  Those of us not going into the game will watch from the tailgate and we will stick around until about 2:45 – 3pm so stop by and say hi on your way home!

This is a great opportunity to see current and former Champions’ campers and counselors, and we are looking forward to a great turnout.

1981 Yearbook!

For all you children of the eighties, not to worry, we did not forget about you! Hot off the retro-press, back to a time when:

  • DOS is released by Microsoft.  This is an odd thought – at this time, no one had heard of Bill Gates, no one had home computers and no one had created any Microsoft jokes.
  • You spent hours at a time completely captivated by playing Frogger, Asteroids, Oregon Trail and Pac-Man.
  • Lady Diana Spencer and Charles, the Prince of Wales are married.  Fathers worldwide worry that daughters wedding expectations are now ridiculously high.
  • Ronald Reagan is elected president at the age of 69 (this is the oldest president we have elected to date!) and boy was he cool! During this same year, President Reagan was shot, but this attempted assassination failed.
  • The wreckage from the Titanic is found in the North Atlantic.  People obsess on how to release the riches of this find – few guess that it will eventually be film director James Cameron (who in 1981 worked on “Escape From New York”.
  • Muhammad Ali retires.  Boxing loses most of its cool factor.
  • 3M launches Post-It Notes, creating the most effective way ever to leave notes for children on mirrors.
  • MTV, the channel that now brings you tons of reality shows and a variety of pop culture programs, launched on August 1. “Video Killed the Radio Star” by the Buggles is the first music video EVER played on MTV! This channel introduced all music, all the time. MTV and it’s VJ’s changed pop culture dramatically.
