1979

Summer is getting closer. All of the talk about how camp is close must make you nostalgic! Think about a time when:

  • Margaret Thatcher is elected Prime minister of the UK
  • The Walkman is released at a cost of $200. The Walkman plays one cassette tape at a time, now we have IPods for less money that play 30 hours of music at a time
  • First snowboard is invented
  • Trivial Pursuit is launched as a nerds revenge, knowing random facts is now considered a plus at dinner parties
  • The first modern Bungee Jump is performed, a very brave person agrees to be the first person to ever bungee jump!
  • Superman the movie is released
  • Gloria Gaynor’s “I Will Survive” tops the charts
  • Charlie’s Angels hits the TV

To help you memorize all of this, just picture Margaret Thatcher listening to “I Will Survive” on her brand new Walkman . . . While riding a snowboard.  Meanwhile, the three Charlie’s Angels are playing Superman in Trivia Pursuit.  No one is bungee jumping.

Picture the image in you mind.  There will be a test later.

Enjoy your 1979 yearbook!

1987

For all you children of the 80’s here is another, never before published online, yearbook. Straight from the Camp Champions Vault!

  • The US Stock Market crashes on “Black Monday.” Steve Sir was actually working at Goldman Sachs and saw a LOT of freaked out traders. At least the markets have stabilized since then! What? They have been doing what? Never mind.
  • The population of the world reaches five billion, most of whom visit the malls after Thanksgiving
  • Kitty Litter is invented and cats get to watch humans scoop away waste. Seriously, if space aliens landed on Earth, we would be hard-pressed to convince them that humans and not cats, rule the world.
  • The Simpsons is seen on TV for the first time. Of course, this means that there was a time when the Simpsons were NOT on TV. Bet your children will NOT believe this one!
  • U2’s “With or Without You”  tops the charts. So U2 has been around even longer than the Simpsons. Of course, they will even make an appearance on the animated show, thus completing the circle of life.
  • Fatal Attraction is a hit movie, thereby reducing the popularity of bunny rabbits as pets.

1974 Yearbook

Thinking back to your summers on Lake LBJ, it is also interesting to think about what else was going on in the world

Richard Nixon resigns as President after the Watergate fiasco. As a result, all future scandals must end in “-gate”. This is a tradition that needs to end.

Nixon signs the Emergency Daylight Savings Time Energy Conservation Act. As if Watergate wasn’t enough, President Nixon also gave us a lot of confused people on selected Sunday mornings.

MRI scanner developed. As far we we can tell, Nixon had nothing to do with this.

Pocket calculator begins to be sold in stores. People learn to spell “hello” by entering “01134″ and reading the display backwards.

The Exorcist debuts at the Box Office. Split pea soup sales plummet.

Eric Clapton’s “I Shot the Sheriff” and “Kung Fu Fighting” top the charts. Also, Harry Chapin releases “Cats in the Cradle” – long distance calls double as sons call their fathers.

Here it is! Enjoy and be sure to check back next week for another yearbook! 1974_THE_TORCH_CAMP_CHAMPIONS.pdf

Digital Yearbook

It is time for the SECOND digital yearbook uploading. Much like the first one, this is a great opportunity to peruse the pages and relive all of your favorite camp memories. Please keep checking back as we will be uploading a new digital yearbook each week! Tell your friends! We want to get as many people as possible connected back with camp!

Flashback to the year:

  • Micronesia gains independence from the US. Life just seems different without Micronesia
  • Space Shuttle Challenger explodes soon after take-off. The world unites to mourn the loss of true heroes, including Christa McAuliffe, the first teacher in space
  • IBM unveils the first laptop computer. It is big, and ugly, but you felt cool if you have one!
  • Nicotine patch is invented. 32% of Americans smoked in the 1980s versus 24% now. Maybe the patch helped!
  • The Crocodile Dundee is released , leading to an explosion of bad Aussie accents talking about putting “shrimp on the barbie”
  • Cheers, Fame, Family Ties and The Cosby Shows are popular on TV. Remember when we all watched Network Television?
  • The Houston Astros play an epic 6-game series against the New York Mets for the National League pennant, culminating in a 16 inning classic that STILL makes Steve Sir sad. The Mets would then beat the Boston Red Sox after a routine ground ball rolls between Bill Buckner’s legs.
